New
technologies enable library staff without a professional
degree to perform a number of the duties that once required
an MLS. Also, library patrons have new ways of satisfying
their information needs and so use the library differently
from the past. In light of these changes, much of librarians'
work that has been regarded as "professional" is
being questioned by administrators and funders of public
and academic libraries. The response of many libraries
has been to rethink the duties of librarians and paraprofessionals.
This session will discuss areas of librarians' work that
are being reassessed and will highlight innovative changes
some libraries have instituted to realign duties with
new definitions of "professional" in the work
of librarians.
