Obstacles
to Learning to Evaluate Resources in an Online Environment

We
know teaching people to evaluate web sites forms a lasting
pattern of critical thinking that leads to the location
of higher quality resources on the Internet. IMSA found
that our measures did not show a difference between pre
and post. This discussion is being held to identify differentiating
criteria.

How can
we help people learn to evaluate resources in an online environment? The
Online Learning Department of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy
set out to build and test just this hypothesis. Twenty-nine librarian web
site evaluations, first and last, were assessed against a rubric. Teaching
people to evaluate web sites forms a lasting pattern of critical thinking
that leads to the location of higher quality resources on the Internet. However,
the pre and post measures show no difference. Why?
